We often receive questions about bra care instructions, especially about how often to wash your bra and what you can do to extend the bras life span. The answer is how well you take care of it. Normal life span is about 1-2 years if you do not take care of it. However, with the right love and attention, it could be one of your closest friends for many years to come.
When the bra loses its shape and elasticity (or if you gain or lose a lot of weight, and it no longer fits), you should get rid of it. A bra is very elastic, so even if it feels very tight around your back when you try it on in the store, it will expand within a few days. (However, the cups will probably not expand, so make sure they fit properly at the first fitting).
The bra will be expanded and feel adjusted to your body after about two weeks.
To keep its elasticity it is vital that the bra should rest between usage. That is one of the reasons why it is good to own a few different ones. Try not to use the same bra more than two days in a row. The larger bra-collection you have, the longer your bras will maintain their shape and sense of quality. Make sure you have at least 5-6 to choose from.
How to wash your bra in the best way
Preferably hand wash your bra. That is the best way to keep it looking great for a long time to come. Never dry it in the tumbler! If you ever need to machine wash it, always use a lingerie washing bag and wash it at 30°C.
While hand washing, make sure the basin is properly cleaned. Then add a teaspoon of mild detergent. Use washing powder for colours, even on your white bras. Remove any padding or push-up pillows, that are removable, before washing. Put the bra in the water and stir the water with your hand. Gently rub the cups as well as the parts that have been worn closest to your skin. Let it soak for about 15 minutes. Then empty the water and rinse thoroughly under the tap.
If you have an exclusive lace bra with beautiful and delicate detailing, you can wash it without detergent in water. Put the bra in clean and luke warm water over night. The water vill make all the skin cells and sediments come off the bra after a few hours and the bra will be as good as new again. Rinse thoroughly under cold water.
When drying your bra, you should carefully squeeze it. A tip is to put the wet bra in a regular salad sling, to make it easy for you to twist all excess water out. Then put the bra on a towel to make them dry. If you need to hang the bra to dry, avoid using the shoulder straps while hanging them, they will extend their size. Also, you should never use a damp bra or put a damp bra i the wardrobe. At least have it to dry over night.
How to keep your bra
If you keep your bras in the right way in the drawer or your closet, they will last much longer. This is especially important for the bras with molded cups. Close the bra in the back and then lay them “spooning” each other. This will not just give you a nice overview of the models you have, they will also protect each other to make their life span on cups last longer. They will take up less space and you will not have to deal with tangled shoulder straps. Also remember not to fold padded and molded bras down the middle between the cups and have the right cup spoon the left and vice versa. They will take up less space if you do it this way, but with time the molding will be destroyed since one of the cups will be turned inside out.
By using these simple care instructions, your bra will last much longer. It will maintain its elasticity and the textile fibers will not be exposed to unnecessarily wear and tear. You will enjoy your beautiful underwear for many years to come.
